Oh a New Addiction!

So recently I just found out about Pinterest! It is not helping me with my Ipad addiction which began at Christmas and now this!

Well when I first began using Tumblr I was extremely in love! Just the fact that you are able to have a visual journal was wonderful. Now with Pinterest you are able to have Boards.

I love it because unlike Tumblr, you are able to organize your visuals! Using my Tumblr I like to post items which inspire me, with Pinterest my inspiration is more organized!

Armor in San Leo

The Castle of San Leo is located in the Marche region in Italy! It is vastly known in connection with, Count of Cagliostro, who was a prisoner in the fortress of San Leo. On April the 4 of 1791, Caglistro was condemned to death by the High court of the Holy Office, he was later pardoned with imppisonment for life by Pope Pio VI.

Here is my collection of images of Medieval armor from my visit to the museum located in the San Leo Castle:

In the battlefields of Medieval knights, armor was very vital. Chainmail was first used before the development of Armor suits. Later the suits were worn over the chainmail. An armor suit for a Medieval Knight was very expensive to produce.

And similar to a tailor-made suit of today, it was custom-made to fit the individual. But the Medieval armor suit an incorrect measurement would impead the knights movement, and would be extremely dangerous!

The knights suit was also a presentation of the status symbol of the individual Medieval Knight!

So much talk about the royal wedding! I was never really in the hoop about it. I had to make a posting on the wedding with my top five favorite hats!!!

Even though the live coverage here in Italy, which is an all day event, went on a little long. I was certainly happy to see all the beautiful hats!!

Multi-Colour Spats

This fabric is a wool blend, when I first laid my eyes on this fabric I thought to myself, what in the world would I make with this. I then begain sketching out some ideas. In the end I was happy with them, they are kind of inspired by Coco Chanel's signature Chanel coat.

I now love the textured multi-colour fabric and the clean black satin!

Apocalyptica - Eurovision Song Contest 2007

Since my almost four year old son received two guitars as gifts I have been having morning music classes with him. One morning while looking for some music for the next lesson I stumbled upon Apocalyptica.

I love the fusion of classical with metal! I enjoy listening to them, and they have so much energy!

I love watching "Project Runway", but because it reminds me too much of my days in Graduate School, I would never remotely think of auditioning. Except for now! On this seasons Episode 4, the amazing Philip Treacy was a guest and judge, the challenge was to design and create and outfit to be worn with one of his hats!

I would have just love to meet and see one of the most amazing milliners of our time!

When checking out other episodes of "Project Runway", I stumbled upon the 'Auctions'. The garments for the challenges are auctined off!

Black and White

Watching the opening ceremony for the 2010 World Cup I enjoyed watching the costumes the Black Eyed Peas wore. I was specifically fascinated by the black and white mummies from "Boom Boom Pow".

In their video the mummies seem to be computer generated, therefore it was interesting to see them on actual people.

(Matching lines, or they seem to perfect maybe the lines were added on after the construction of the suits?)

Aprons

It is customery for every women to have a collection of aprons to use in their Italian kitchen. It is nice to see that women in Italy are still avid users of aprons in their everyday lives.

I have already made a couple as gifts, because I know they are very practical. For this reason I have been inspired to conduct some research and start making a line of aprons.

Here is some of my research, I have always been attracted to vintage anything!

And not only aprons to be used in the kitchen but also at work, the pockets are wonderful to keep scissors, tape measure, etc. close by. I made a quick interpretation of one of these to use at work, it is very handy!

The of course they are the lovely decorated versons to be used when one has guests over for dinner!

I have already begun to make some versions of these aprons, of course I will post them when they are completed!

For my new piece in my Etsy shop I was inspired by the beautiful weather! Finally we see some sun, and I can see our rosebush starting to bloom. Hopefully it is the end of snow for us!

This lovely is set on a felt wired base. The colors and feel of the fabrics inspired me to make this headpiece. The silky netting is the perfect length to just covers one's eyes. Mysterious anyone??

I recently purchased the March 2010 Italia Vogue which was a double issue including a Couture issue! (That's one reason I love living in Italy, the amazing magazines are much less here, it was almost impossible to spend that amount of money to purchase it in the States!)

Studing fashion as I grew up I know that Milan, Italy is the fashion capital of the world. But everday I learn of new amazing Italian masters!

Fernanda Gattinoni, Italian born in 1906 moved to London in the 1920's. There he perfected his interest in design and tailored clothes. He has worked with icons such as Gabrielle Chanel, Audrey Hepburn, Ava Gardner, Ingrid Bergman, and Ian Claire.

In the 1930's he returns to Italy. He opens up the couture house, Ventura in Milan. Four years later headquarter are opened in Rome. It not only represented a growing business but a econonic and cultural renewal for the county. An area of one hundred and twenty thousand square meters for workers is set up.

Fernanda Gattinoni dies on the 26th of November 2002 in his home in Rome, he was 96 years old. Today Guillermo Mariotto runs the couture house.

-She was born as Vivienne Isabel Swire.

-A store was opened in 1970 called "Let it Rock", with her then-partner of the Sex Pistols, Malcolm McLaren.

-She reportedly went knickerless when receiving her OBE from Queen Elizabeth.

Cosplay?

I have been aware of the cosplayers subculture that centers around characters from popular fiction in Japan. And what does Cosplay mean? It is actually short for "costume play".

Until now I was not aware of the amazing professional costumes that some of the participants wear! You can also find participants all over the world!

Here are some interesting facts:

-In 1990 in Taiwan, the first cosplay conference took place.

-Lolita fashion is a style of cosplay dressing that began in the culture.

-Japanese cosplay covers a spread of costumes and convention masquerades. While in costume, you must be the character, in thoughts, words, and action.

It amazes me how beautiful and professionally done some of the costumes are! Try to Google and see the out pour of information you will find!

Vionnet- Paris Exhibit

For the new year I would love to take advantage of some of the wonder museums and exhibits close by! First on my list is an amazing exhibit devoted to the master of couture, Madeleine Vionnet.

From June 24, 2009 until January 31, 2010, Les Arts Décoratifs located in Paris, are displaying 200 dresses, 750 dress patterns and 75 photo albums of Madeleine Vionnet.

Vionnet was definitely a master of here own trade! I will keep my fingers crossed I will get to see it before it ends!

Presents 2009

I was very happy that this year I made sure a few of my presents were specially handmade.

Since this was the first year my son was attending pre-school, I made three little christmas angels for each of his teachers.

And I had to make at least on of my son's gifts! He loved it, a cute little stuffed owl that he calls, "Gufo", that's owl in Italian. He does not go to bed without him.

That Darn Internet!

Our internet is acting up and at the moment I do not have time to sit down and figure out the problem. (I am the computer technician of the house.) It just has something to doing with uploading photos! So frustrating!!

Therefore I have not been able to post my two newest posts. But at the moment I am in the middle of several projects for clients, plus Christmas present making.

As soon as I figure it out I will post those two additional blog!

The Week.

Apart from having a cold and my son having the chicken-pox I continued to move along!

One to my list, now I have a dress ( which I am awaiting fabric) , a men's hat, and a blouse to complete. The list never seems to get shorter, and that's a good thing because it means I continue to work!!

Dress Project

So I sent off the package to the UK! It not only contained the desired dress, but a matching bolero and matching headpiece! I hope she enjoys!!

I completed the black woolen women's hat with black veil!

I love creating such classic lovliess! I am so glad people still request them and wear them!!

A Little Sweetness

And since we are now into December and all the Christmas decorations around town are now up I was in the holiday mood.

Candy Striped Fascinator

Using a buckram wire based disk, I constructed this lovely fascinator / headpiece!

I had the feathers, the fabric, and the veiling! It was completed yesterday morning! More photos and purchasing can be found in my Etsy shop.

A Small Project!

A client who runs one of the two local grocery business once asked me to make her a hat for her new grand-daughter. At the time I was swamped with projects and I never got around to making in. This morning I decided to take a few hours from my morning to finally complete it for her.

I had been thinking about it for days. Now I finally got it done!

I loved the red wool, but I thought it needed a little something. So I hand stitch the felt flowers and center beads. What a cutie!

Now I don't have to try to avoid here everytime I see her! (That's bad!!)

I will deliver her cute little hat later this afternoon!

Her grand-daughter will now be styling in the cold weather that has already arrived.

Moving Right Along!

Projects, projects, projects!

Recently I have been very blessed that I have had work coming my way! So little time, so many ideas!

I had to stop from my goal of two new items a week for my Etsy shop. But I am fighting against time to begin a couple of new ideas I have had!

Wristlets

The cold weather is here, I hate it when I am working and my hands are cold! Therefore I drafted a glove pattern. Varying that pattern I have started making Wristlets, gauntlet length.

All the current Italian Fashion Magazines contain variations of gloves, fingerless, gauntlet and opera length. I have been inspired! I am beginning to fill up my sketchbook with ideas!

I just wish I could sew faster!!

Spats

I began making men's spats! Soon I will be able to post them in my shop!

Oh, I am also making this pair for a friend and client who is a performing artist.

Spats!

Using an orange and pink cotton fabric which I have cut 1 1/2 wide stripes, then stitched together, will be the top layer be very appealing and fit perfect with the rest of her costume and show! (I am also constructing a similar men's pair.)

The photo on the below that one, is the base made of canvas which the top layer is attached. They will contain a hidden lacing closure at the center-back. This closure will allow comfort for all types of movement which she requires as a performer. The closure will also allow her the ability for the spats to be worn with a variety of shoes.

I am also working on a few custom orders including two dresses, one blouse, and a hat!

Anna Sui Spring/Summer 2010

In he eighties Detroit-born Anna Sui began designing, in 1991 she debuted on the runway.

Love the hat!

Her aesthetic is easily recognizable in her patchwork and aesthetics of boudoir. So of her clients consist of Nicole Kidman, Marilyn Manson, Drew Barrymore, Sofia Coppola, and Stevie Nicks.

She has 32 boutiques, international cult status, a successful beauty line, and the Anna Sui BoHo Barbie®.

After a year of being active in the Etsy community, it is alway nice to encounter shops run by talented people. Recently while in the forum, I a wonderful shop located in Leeds. It was a lovely pleasure to meet and chat with Alison, who is the creator of all here beautiful pieces.

When did you begin creating?

"I have always been very creative and trained at art school before specialising in theatre wardrobe which i studied for three years ." She was exposed to mask making, millinery, and construction of period underwear, theatrical costumes, and military uniforms.

"I then went on to get a job in a wardrobe department as a wardrobe assistant, then was promoted to a costume prop maker. My work involves many areas such as millinery, special effects on costumes,dyeing fabrics,making jewellry, mask making, pattern cutting and constructing costumes."

What or who inspires you?

"I'm inspired by so much but in particular I love costume and textiles, books, colour and nature. I also love the work of Vivienne Westwood and John Galliano.

I love looking through books and magazines and keep a box full of inspirational pictures. I have sketchbooks where i note down ideas. " Many of these elements are present in projects she is working on, such as fabric or colour.

I noticed you have a theater background, do you miss working specifically in that field?

"I still work full time in theatre and i do get to make some interesting things! I am currently working on a stage version of 'The Secret Garden' so have quite a bit of millinery to do. I also teach millinery part time to degree students."

When did you decide to open your Etsy shop? And why?

"I have been designing, making and selling handbags, purses, bag charms, jewellery and cards for the past three years. I have two display cabinets which Isell my work from and these are situated in the theatre foyer and have been very successful. I wanted to expand the business this year and so decided to join etsy. I love the idea of selling my work to someone across the world!"

It was a wonderful pleasure to me and chat with Alison! I really enjoyed exploring her shop! I love her attention to detail!

This past week I decided to start a Tumblr account. It is also a blogging platform to post text, images, video, links, quotes and audio to the tumblrlog- or short-form blog. I found it very easy to use.

My thought on it is that I will be using it as a journal. I can easily access and post photos, text, etc. I see it as a Twitter version of Blogspot. And I have already begun to meet so many people from all over the world!

Spats, Spats, and More Spats!!

WHAT IS A SPAT?

Spats are a type of shoe accessory covering the instep and ankle. They were primarily worn in the late 19th and early 20 th centuries. Originally they were made of leather. Those for horseback riding continue to be made of leather. They can be made of any and all materials, a few examples are wool, polyester, and canvas.

Traditionally they are used as an accessory in marching band uniforms, pipe bands, in various militaries, and in everyday clerical clothing. They are also used for safety reasons in certain industries such as, in foundries, by welders, and even chainsaw operators.

WHY DO I MAKE THEM?

I am inspired by that lovely feeling of completing a three piece men's tailored suit! Or even the completion of a corset. I refer to my spats as, " little mini corset's for ones ankles. " I love to incorporate various classic tailoring and corseting techniques !

A pair of nicely tailored spats can add so much more to one's shoe collection! You can completely change the look and feel of your overall outfit! And when the cold weather comes around you can continue to use your summer shoes year round! I continue to get inspired by glancing though Italian fashion magazines!

MY 15TH PAIR!

This morning I completed and posted my fifteenth pair in my Etsy shop! Eighty percent of their construction is using hand-stitching. The lining and outer wool's, center back and front seams are machine stitched.

Navy Blue & Black Spats- Monjio

I have used a beautiful black Italian wool. Individually I have hand-stitched fourteen silver metal loops for the lacing closure. I love incorporating the lacing closure into various pairs because it allows them to be more versatile. They can be used over a variety of shoes and boots!

I have a great passion for traditional military uniforms with elaborate amazing decoration!

Of course I will continue to make more! I have an ongoing research and sketchbook with many other designs and styles ready to go!

The collection contains 100 pieces from clothing to acessories, for girls and boys ages 4 to 14. The line, is expected to launch January in Italy, France, the U.K., Russia, the U.S., Japan, and Eastern Europe.

As Diesel chief Renzo Rosso told WWD, "Galliano likes to play and create fairy-tale worlds even for adults. Imagine what he can do for kids."

50 Years of Pantyhose!

In the 50's women's dress meant you had to wear intimate pieces of clothing such as nylons. The only way to keep one's nylons up was with a garter belt and sometimes squeezing into a girdle.

In 1959, at the request of his wife, Allen Grant Sr. invented the first pair of pantyhose. Being a proper lady, Ethel Boone Gant would not be seen in public not wearing her hosiery. She was pregnant at the time and traveling on an overnight train. With her expanding belly it was uncomfortable for her to keep her garter belt over her belly for her stockings.

It was first called, "Panti-Legs", when Mr. Gant and a colleague of his developed a pair of panties fastened to a pair of stockings. Commercial sales began in various department stores, but sales they didn't really grab the attention of many women, until the rise of the miniskirt in the mid- 1960's. Also at this time the cost of pantyhose were more affordable with new sewing techniques and fabrics such as spandex.

Later in the 1970's and 80's more women were prominent in the workplace, sales grew. Today you can definitely find customers of pantyhose in conservative work environments, and of course on the fashion runways!

United Bamboo- Summer/Spring 2010

Glancing through the Spring/Summer 2010 Ready-to-Wear shows I stumbled upon United Bamboo. I thought the designs and construction of the garments to be unique.

So reading up on I found out that United Bamboo is made up of a team of two. Thuy Pham- Vietnamese-born and Miho Aoki- Japanese-born and F.I.T alum. Their New York runway debut was in 1998.

Asymmetrical shapes, innovative fabrics and patterns, and origami type pleating are some of the elements present in their collections.

It was interesting to see their headwear made of black sinamay!

When time permits I always enjoy learning about talented active designers in the wonderful world of fashion!!

Sewing Technique- Flat-lining

An active stitcher or costume technician can spend so much money on interfacing, they certainly are costly. I have have found over the years that I rarely us them. Of course they are some things in which only interfacing will do. For collars, waistbands, and cuffs are a few examples. But mostly for my creating I only use flat-lining.

I was slightly surprised that not everyone uses this technique. As I found out through private sewing classes that I teach, many had not even heard of it!

I have vastly used this technique in the construction of theater and opera. In classic tailoring it is a must- only it is done by hand. What is Flat-lining? Basically it is a technique used to stiffen or to give a different feel or body to a fabric which does not. I usually use fabrics that are firm and stiff but not heavy, fabrics such as denium, or canvas. Therefore you can go shopping at Joann's or Wal-mart in their bin fabrics! It can be any color or fabric as long as it has the right body.

Note- The most important thing to remember is that you must wash and press the fabric before you use it. You definitely do not want it to shrink!

It can be difficult to explain so I decided to write a tutorial of sorts, with step-by-step photos. Here goes:

1. Chose your fabrics

My Fabrics:

I am using a white canvas fabric and a almost sheer silk I will be making one of my cuffs with lacing. After washing and pressing I am ready to go.

2. Draw pattern pieces on to canvas

These are my three pattern pieces which I have drawn onto the canvas.

Take note of the third piece containing stitching! You will see it again in step 4, I got a little ahead of myself.

3. Place canvas on to fabric. This is the fabric you are wanting to show.

The Pins:

I placed my canvas piece on to the wrong side of my silk. Then I begin pinning - first the center, then the corners, and the sides. Note that my pins are placed perpendicular to my stitching line with the points towards the seam-allowance. Placing the pins in this manner allows you to easily pull out the pins as you stitch.

As you pin, make sure your fabric is smoothed so your fabrics are completely flat.

4. Using a basting stitch, stitch the two fabrics together.

I find it best to stitch along the sides first, lengthwise, then the tops and bottoms. Removing the pins as you stitch. Make sure you stitch 1/8 of an inch outside the stitching line towards the seam allowance.

After stitching all the pieces, press them. Make sure they are nice and flat.

5. Stitch the pieces together.

Just stitch normally right on the stitching line.

Final step

After stitching the pieces together, press. Then finish off your seam allowances as your normally would.

Here you can see the silk has a stiffness which is needed for my cuff. It now has it's own body and form.

This technique can be used with any two fabrics. It just depends what your project is. It is certainly nice not to have to shell out all those bucks for something you can do for less! I find it also works better for me.

It is a point of the year where everyone should know to stop wearing summer hats, the straw stops here! It is time to start wearing some fabric , some felt , and fall hats in general !!

Even though I found information regarding this "National" holiday I was not able to locate the origins of it. In various sites, you can send in E-greeting celebrating Hat Month. Or if you prefer to shop, you can find fall and winter hats available for purchase.

First, of all I would like to say sorry to all for my absence. Summer is here, my husband is on summer vacation from work. I have been slacking on my blog. Sorry to all my readers.

Secondly, I have been missing, my Cycles of Fashion, Thursday posts. I will try it again beginning next week. This coming Thursday I will start my Cycles of Fashion again. I realized I really enjoyed meeting and learning about fellow Etsy artisans. I also missed the researching part!

So now, I have been working on some veil for my Etsy shop. They have been fun! Each different, each very unique!

First try at a veil!

Feathered Piece with Tulle veiling

This one contains an off-white tulle veil. This was actually the first one! I was inspired by 1800 women's ridding attire!

I made a pattern for this marvelous base made of three buckram pieces and some wire. I really love how I was able to attain the lovely curved shape to go with the contour of the head.

Midnight Blue Bandeau Veil

I always enjoy working with various fabrics. I really enjoy making fabric flowers! This is on a contoured raindrop shape. I love how the black veiling goes over the face at an angle!

Delicate.

Champagne Band- Veil

I love the delicacy of this piece. I started of with the buckram band, covered it in a pale pink silk, but I felt like it needed something more. I then added the lace layer. It is a from a small piece of beautiful lace I was keeping aside for the perfect project. I think it fits well here!

I then added a little bit of sparkle with some green beads, pearls, and a decorative rhinestone drop.

Headband with Veil

This has to be one of my favorites! Almost five years ago there was a cute, expensive, decorative fabric shop in Austin, Texas. When I first saw this ribbon I fell in love. I felt I had to have it, until I found out it was $36 a yard. I was heart broken.

Months later though when I heard the store was going out of business and having a huge sale, I strolled back in, with my fingers crossed hoping it was still there. I was just in time to buy the remaining yard for half price!

I think originally I had in mind to use it on a bonnet. I never got around to making that bonnet and for about five years I just held on to it, making sure it travelled to Italy with me!

Now I made this lovely head band with it. It is beautiful, something about the colors and the detail. Beauty!

So here are a few of the veils I have completed. Today I finally listed all eight of them in my shop. I have sketchbook pages full of other ideas for veil. There will be many more to come.

Swimsuit Cover-up Contest Results

The winners of the Craftzine / Singer Contest winners have been announced. Unfortunately, there will not be a new sewing machine for me anywhere in the near future. It was fun, I always enjoy challenging myself!

New Research

Now to move along. I have been researching something new which I have begun to make to sell in my Etsy shop.

The beauty of the veil! Working with veiling is wonderful. The end result is always that of beauty and delicacy!

I begin by conducting some research or background on a subject before I begin producing it for my shop. I find it so inspiring!

Birdcage Veiling

Why is it called the "birdcage"? It is called this because it is slightly bouffant and "enclosing" the face like a cage. It floats over the face with out rubbing against the ends of the eyelashes.

We are now going to travel to an Etsy Shop in France this lovely milliner creates hats and headwear. Lucy is the talent behind all the creations in her shop. She started creating and drawing at a very young age. She not only creates and runs her own shop, she works in a hat workshop during the day!

Millinery

In modern times, a milliner is a person who designs, makes, sells or trims hats. Fascinators are a style of millinery used for brides, weddings, and other special occasions.

When asked what she is inspired by she responded:

"I would say everything inspires me! You have to be curious and interested in everything! "

Various periods of fashion attract her. She stated that each have their own interesting element.

"I like creators such as Gareth Pugh, Viktor & Rolf, John Galliano...they all have a very strong vision, a theartrical presence."

Creative Process

She has an amazing creative process:

"Sometimes I'll have a clear idea of what I want to make. I'll maybe do a quick sketch and jot done some notes but I'll just get right down to it! Other times I'll play around with fabic (or some other material), experimenting, to see what effects I can get. I also keep a little sketch book which is good for writing down ideas and such for future projects."

This Past Week...

So for the most part, this week I felt as though I was holding my breath. Mainly because of the Craftzine Swimsuit Cover-up Contest. I was also a little down about my "Cycles of Fashion" posts. This week I was busy working away on a handful of projects I had to complete and deliver.

The Contest

Two days have passed since the deadline, still no results. I am waiting patiently. I was impressed by how creative so many of the entries were. I also found it interesting that the sewing level ranged from beginner to advanced. I am so excited to hear the results!

As I mentioned previously, I desperately need a new machine. When we moved to Italy, I could not bring along my machine. After several months of living here, I purchased an inexpensive Singer. It is a model for beginning sewers, it has taken so much action! All my projects are made using that machine.

I continue to cross my fingers, my thoughts are with that grand prize of a new Singer!!

Cycles of Fashion

After a month or so of writing my Thursday posts of "Cycles of Fashion", I decided to stop writing it. Responses to my posts were not as good as I thought they would be. I am in love with history of fashion! I thought it would be an excellent way to present and feature fellow Etsians.

Sad to say, I think I spent more time conducting the research for my posts then I received from people reading them. Next week will be my last post for, "Cycles of Fashion."

Projects

At the end of last week, the beginning of this week, I had a handful of projects to complete and deliver before the end of the week.

A client of mine had a beautiful vintage cotton batiste which she wanted made into a nightgown. Another person had started the project for her but never completed it.

The body and hem of the gown were already complete. All I had to do was make the top neck, back, and arm portions and attach the body to it.

For the armscye, I finished it off with a hand-rolled hem. It was fun matching and stitching the white and yellow trim.

She is now ready for those hot Italian summer nights! (It is very hot here, reminds me of Texas!)

Custom Dress

Next up was to make sure everything was to the satisfaction of a young family friend who was to celebrate here eighteenth birthday. She is a very talented young lady, she came to me with an amazing design already sketched!

Above you see the dress, I also made a matching draw-string purse, with pocket inside. I always think pockets inside a bag or purse are a little more practical. I also made a cuff, using some fabric from my wedding dress for the roses, and fabric from her dress as well.

And last but not least, for the mid- to end of last week (after my photos for the swimsuit cover-up were posted) I had to make sure a package to Texas was on it's way.

I constructed a black with white pin-striped newsboy hat for a good friend of mine. It was cutie! I hope her son enjoys wearing it in style!

Now What?

I have a short break from projects for clients, I am excited to work on some hats, and cuffs for my Etsy shop!

This Thursday!!

This coming Thursday is the last day for the extended deadline for the Singer/Craftzine Swimsuit Cover-up Contest! I am in great need of a new sewing machine, which is the main prize! I am keeping my fingers crossed!

This is the first cover-up that I made. I thought it would be more of a challenage if I converted scarves into cover-ups. The characteristics of these lovely summer scarves are just want I was looking for. Something, fresh, and wispy!

This was the first cover-up I constructed for the contest. I used a pleated sheer scarve and a silk square one with a floral print. I entirely draped this one, I used the printed floral scarve on the bias, to stay close to the body. I was also able to play with the printed design as well. Here you can see the front view.

Back View

For easy wear and removal, I used a separating zipper on the right side seam. All the hems are finished off by a hand-stitched rolled hem. I love how it just flows!

This are the two scarves used for the second one:

The first one is made of a linen-silk blend It contains lovely stripes to play with! The second I just thought was amazing. I had to incorporate it into my cover-up! It is a lovely silk scarve with asian crain motif. I think most likely printed then hand-painted, I purchased it for two euros at the Saturday morning mercato.

Here you can see the front and the back. I flat-patterned the top, which then determined what the skirt portion would be. It is a wrap cover-up, the ties come from the sides and tie at the front. This again contains easy wear and removal.

On the top portion I wanted to play with the stripes. The bust pieces match up perfectly with the armscye pieces. It contains and open back.

So those are my two enteries! It was a very enjoyable project!

We shall see what happens this week!

P.S. Oh! Thanks so much to my wonderful model. It does wonders on a person rather than my dress form!

Belle Noelle

This week are visiting an Etsy shop in Illinois, USA! Janelle is the designer and creator of Belle Noelle. She has been designing for over ten years, she is a wife and mother of two, wow! She actually began creating as a helper to her step-mother twenty years ago.

Her creations are clean and classic! What first grabbed my attention was her use of pleating and her smooth clean designs.

Inspiration

Previously living in New York she was able to watch the garment district and friends for inspiration. She now has to "focus on what will make a woman feel pretty and comfortable", living in the midwest.

Creative Process

When creating Janelle from a design or from a thought in here head she first thinks, "What do I want to wear?" Her designs must be practical for an everyday woman, mother, and wife. One of her favorite steps in her creation process are choosing the fabric, buttons, etc.

As Janelle says, "I love the fifties which is cruel because I have no waist. I love how well the women were put together, the hats..the gloves..all of it."

A Stroll in Time:

1950s

Dior's brought us "The New Look", it was the symbol of the new life style and hopes of the people. It was a wonderful period in which women would never think of leaving their home without gloves and a hat! Classic.

Victorian

From 1837-1901 Queen Victoria reigned. In 1841 cartridge pleats began to be used, to pull up the skirt fabric. Flat pleating would add to the overall hem width and fullness of the skirt.

"I decided to open my Etsy shop in 2006 after selling to my friends for two seasons and having people ask me to make them things. I was looking into the whole website thing and came across Etsy. I don't remember where...maybe Craftser? and thought, "well before I make this into a big production this would be a good place to test out the waters."

After starting her shop she had to take a break from her career because of relocation and giving birth to a new child. Identifying with Janelle as a mother and creator, I am always curious as to how other mothers do it! It's always wonderful to have the support and understanding of the other half of the team!

As Janelle says:

"It's madness! I don't sleep. At least once a week, I tell myself that this is the stupidest thing I could ever do, trying to be a one-woman sweatshop and a mother, but I keep doing it, because I love the high of seeing someone in something I created and getting positive feedback. I love it. My husband and I juggle the kids. He encourages me in whatever I do. He races home from work when I have fittings scheduled, stays up late with the baby while I sew into the night, rearranges his schedule so I can get things done and doesn't flinch when I have to shell out money and invest in my business. He's a saint. "

Please excuse my late post. I try my best, and usually succeed to post on Tuesdays and Thursdays of every week. This week I have missed my goal of Tuesday, so I have to post today.

The weather has been amazing! And I have been keeping busy. This past week I began working on something I had never thought of attempting. I began making lovely feminine cuffs! I have continued to work on a dress, and I just completed two swim-suit covers I will be photographing this afternoon to enter into the Craftzine/Singer Contest.

Next week I will be delivering a dress to a girl who will be turning eighteen. The dress is beautifully constructed from her own design. I thought it would be wonderful to make something extra for her. So using left over fabric from her dress I made her a lovely cuff!

Cuffs/Fabric Bracelets

I am not much of a jewelry wearer, but sometimes when I dress-up, I think it would be nice to wear an accessory, something beautiful and feminine!

So using clasic millinery techniques- for the decor, and drafting minature corsets- to fit perfect on the wrist, I have been having so much fun constructing cuffs or decorative fabric bracelets.

So this is the first and the gift that I made. Using remains of the fabric from the dress I used a velvet base bound along the edges with a bias. And included two lovely butterflies, since the person receiving the dress and the gift is so keen to buterflies!

For this beauty I was inspired by the wonderful summer day! And I had also received my wonderful order of ribbons from a fellow Etsy shop- The Stitch End. They have a lovely assortment of ribbons and buttons!

I began with a fucshia base and using classic millinery ribbon techniques I constructed the decor. The ribbons were so inspiring!

These sequence pieces had been in my possession for a short time time, I knew I was saving them for something. The grey silk shantung is ruched and then attached to the three piece base. I used a lovely ribbon for the flower and a velvet vintage black leaf to finish it off!

This one is made of a vintage linen base. It is from a curtain my husband remembers having in the house growing up. We are not certain how old the curtain is but as far back as he can remember it was there.

I had a open-weave ribbon that fit perfect for a classic cuff. This cuff contains a lacing for a closure. I thought it would be nice to combine the classic with the flirty!

This one I constructed after watching a 17th century Italian movie. I wanted to incorporate some of the techniques used on the women's dresses.

I rouched a one inch piece of purple silk, with cording along the edges and attached it on the orange silk shantung base. I then added box-pleats using the red ribbon, and used decorative hand-stitching to attach it on the the base. Of course I had to include some frilly ribbon, using more of the ribbon from my newly acquired pieces!

And here I have included two of the scarves used to make one of my swim-suit cover. I enjoyed challenging myself and creating them using only summer, wispy, see-through, scarves of linen and silk!

I will keep my fingers crossed on the wonderful prize of a much needed new sewing machine!!!

I am always so excited to feature a Etsy Fashion Creator in my Thursday posts. This week I am especially excited to feature an amazing artist. Zy Han is located in Malaysia, she creates the most stunning hand painted batik fabrics. She began creating more than three years ago!

Visiting her shop I think the first thing that jumps out at me is how stunning her fabrics are! They contain wonderful colors, and easy lovely flow, and they express such beauty.

"Natural environment.Flowers,birds,wind,ocean..Everything that surrounds me are magic!", this is her inspiration! She is drawn to contemporary and reto periods of fashion.

Batik

It is traditionally and antique Indonesian art. A batik can take from one day to three months to complete, depending on the number of colors, the sun, and the fabric stability. To produce a batik a wax-base is used in the process. The wax is used in a liquid form in a cantin, which is a wooden pen-like tool .

There are about three thousand recorded batik fabric patterns.

The Process:

1. The fabric is washed, dried, and pressed so that the wax and dyes can be absorbed evenly. The design is then drawn onto the the fabric. This can be done from memory, free-hand, or tracing the design on to the fabric over a light box.

2. Using the cantin, the wax is applied in broad strokes. Where the wax is applied, determines the areas that will resist the first color to be applied.

3. The wax is removed with hot water and left in a cold water vat for an hour. The fabric is then dried in the sun, to help remove some of the residual wax which can then be scraped off.

4. All other areas except the ones identified for the next colour are waxed over again. This process if repeated for every colour in the design, there is no limit to the number of colours.

5. When the final boil and rinse has been done, the fabric is dried in the sun.

In the past I tried my hand at the wonderful art of batik, but I must say I did not produce something of this complex or beautiful. Zy's process for creating begins with a preliminary sketch of her design. Before beginning with the delicate hands on process, she has a collection of designs in a sketch book that she refers to.

This weekend I saw so many images of the Staples Center in Los Angeles, California. Of course it made me recall over three years of commute to work, I always had to pass down that street.

I also had to recall that night so long ago that I waited in anticipation, as almost everyone did, for the premiere of the Thriller video.

Now the Staples Center is the location for one of the most anticipated events of the year for one of the most amazing performers to ever exist.

Living out of the States, we have felt some of the aftermath of the death of Michael Jackson.

The below image is an amazing creation, it is a wonderful, classy goodbye.

Thursdays are designated for my "Cycles of Fashion" posts. The Etsy sellers I feature, and my research are huge inspirations to me. This week, as I was conducting my research on Tuesday morning. I was completely side tracked.

Sorry, I am slacking this week, but I spent more time then I care to tell in the Metropolitan Museum, "Works of Art The Costume Institution" website. I love that site! They have an amazing collection Database!

Junya Watanabe- Spring/Summer 2010 -Paris.

Two things called my attention to this collection:

1. The variation of hat styles.

Every model walked down the runway wearing a hat!

2. The combination of fabrics.

Also, vests and hats are always classy!

Featured Artist-

Ozzana

This weeks featured fashion creator is located in London, England. Ozzana began creating at a young age. "My first creations were rag dolls and outfits for them. Making simple clothes and accessories such as hats and bags for my sister and myself followed shortly."

Her Etsy shop is made up of 'one of a kind' unique creations. I also loved the detail her items contain, whether it be machine embroidery, cutout, or applique.

She claims she is stuck in the 1920's. She loves the straight, clear, definite design and functionality of the period.

She is a fan of Chanel's "little black dress".

Coco Chanel

Chanel's concept of the "little black dress" was ahead of it's time. Her radical trend of the black dress was the first time black clothing was used, and not designed for a funeral.

Inspiration

"Architecture, art movements, nature, music, films..... My current collection was inspired by Scottish Art Nouveau artist and architect Charles Rennie Mackintosh – his stained glass windows creations and decorative railings in particular. Also I am continuously inspired by the Japanese fashion designers such as Issey Miyake, Rei Kawakubo and Yoji Yamamoto."

Creative Process

"I mostly start by making notes and observational sketches, then I select the ones that I like and develop them further. Sometimes I construct directly on the dress stand, and at other times I make paper patterns. I have an idea which fabrics I will use for each design but this changes as I progress and I also work on more than one piece at a time -often each of them ending as a combination of two or more different initial ideas. I enjoy manipulating and combining unrelated fabrics and materials endlessly. The final result gives me a great buzz!"

The straight sheath dresses were used during the day. The sheath dress was fitted and darted or contained a princess seam. Many early fifties garments contained a boat or jeweled neckline.

Mary Quant, Twiggy, and the mini skirt were popular in this period. The mini skirt mania began around 1966 then in 1967 it could be seen nationwide.

For improving the wear and performance of a fabric or garment, synthetic yarns began being used with natural fibers. There was a huge global jump of production plants of synthetic fibers.

This period brought a freedom to women's dress that had never been seen before. With easier travel we were exposed to various fashions of other countries. We began seeing vast types of exotic fabrics which contained detailing such as, garments with edged decor in silver, gold or other metallic embroidered.

Swimsuit Cover-up

Leaving my sewing machine I flew into Italy. A few months after arrival I purchased a machine. It sure is better then hand-stitching everything. Unfortunately it was reasonable priced beginners machine.

I have been using it for about two years now. A few days ago I stumbled upon this website. And what do you know they are having a contest in which the winner will receive a new Singer sewing machine!!

With this in mind I took a stroll in the mercato early Saturday morning. I purchased two silk scarves, one is green with a white floral print, the other is more of a medium green with a wonderful texture of pleating! Both are nice because they have that sheer wispy feel!

My only thought is to construct a swimsuit cover which can be worn during a brunch, then removed to enjoy the beach. After some research, which I have included some of my favorite summer 2009 designs.

I began cutting and draping. My goal is to win that new machine!

Wish me luck! Off I go!

Efia Fair

Efia Fair is located in Southern California. She began creating at a very young age. Her first creations were picture books, collages, and little dolls. As a teen she began making dresses for herself. She just recently learned to knit last year, creating crocheted creations began as a child.

As I visited her shop I could see various elements from numerous fashion eras within her shop. It was amazingly interesting to me how she combines crochet and fabric, and crochet with lace. Her designs are definitely unique!

She is drawn a variety of fashion periods:
"Definitely the Victorian Era, Baroque, Medieval and the like... I love the rich colors and fabrics, and the excuse to be frilly and fancy! More recently I love the fashions of the 30s and 50s. Feminine, structured, streamlined... and of course the circle skirts of the fifties I have always thought to be beautiful and flattering."

Efie is mostly inspired by nature, she said:

"Nature - flowers and birds and landscapes. Color is a huge inspiration for me, I have always LOVED the endless array of colors in this world, and as a designer I enjoy playing with color combinations until I see one that clicks for me. Also, I am inspired by my supplies! Yarns, fabrics, buttons and ribbons really get my imagination going."

Creative Process

Her inspiration continues in her creative process:

"I usually pick out my materials and go from there. Sometimes I have in mind exactly what I will create, and other times it is truly a process that surprises me, developing as I go along. A lot of times I find myself working on several projects at once."

Romantic Era

The V-pointed bodice waistline was vastly prominent in the Romantic Era, it was a change from the round waistlines. Short gloves were worn in the day to match one's dress, or attire. Along with short , long gloves to reach ones sleeve were used for night attire. At this time we began to see women's sleeves billowing out in huge gigot sleeves.

The sewing machine arrived in 1860. Along with synthetic dyes, and couture houses began. The late-Victorian era brought the hour-glass figure, soon to be the S-bend shape soon to arrive in Edwardian corsetry.

Women were began to wear tailored jacket fashion. The fullness of the skirt began to fall into pleats as the bustle was beginning to disappear. In 1893, the bustle softened until only a small pad was left.

"A friend of mine (the person who taught me to knit, actually) told me about Etsy. Originally we were going to open a shop together, but it ended up being just me. Blouse Project- Part 3

Both blouses are completed and delivered to the happy client!

It took me a little longer to complete and deliver the second blouse because I was unable to schedule a fitting with my client sooner. Because I had a limited amount of fabric, and it was a would be difficult to attain more fabric, I did not want to complete the seams entirely until after our fitting.

All went wonderfully well in our fitting, so I was then able to finish the blouse. It was delivered to the customer this past weekend!

As you can see from the picture, the two embroidery pieces were postitoned on the front of the blouse this time. This design was something I found in a magazine which I felt would work perfectly with the fabric.

Drafting the pattern was very enjoyable. I begin by flat-patten drafting it, then for the front and back collar bit I found it easier draping it in muslin for the patten pieces. It is four pieces, the two fronts, one back, and a small center back piece for the collar at the neck.

The back contains a nice clean, finish!

The client was wonderfully satisfied! I was as well, especially with the fact that the client was happy and both designs were completely different.

Now I am off to find another challenging project!!

Extra: Reproduced Skirt

The client I produced the blouses for also had a skirt that had been made for her some time ago by the seamstress she has used for many years. The skirt was made of a beautiful mutted rose out of a wool blend material.

When the skirt was made for, she didn't have a specific design in mind. Her seamstress produced an a-line skirt using most if not all the fabric. My client was slightly unhappy with it.

She had another skirt, pictured below in velour which she really liked the fit and design, she asked me to to convert the a-line skirt to that of her velour skirt design.

This is what her new skirt looks like!

The skirt is basically made out of swirls of fabric. At first I thought, it's simple, I will just draft the pattern. I realized it was much easier to drape layers of muslin following the various sections.

It is made of five pieces and a waistband with a zipper in the center back. Each of the sections, or pieces begin on the straight of grain and swirl around until they reach bottom of the hem. This is a wonderful pattern to add to my collection!

Clare Webster Designs

Clare,creates sculptural textiles accessories and she is located in the United Kingdom. She began ceating at a young age and has continued to create thoughout her life. She began working with the pleated stitch technique while doing her degree, which she attained in 1999. In 2002, she set up her accessories company.

She has a unique amazing Etsy shop! So many elements of various fashion eras are present throughtout her creations. As a unique fashion creator I was curious as to what artists inspired her, what is her process of creating, and why she decided to open up her Etsy shop.

When visiting her shop two elements jumped right out at me:

First- her use of textile covered buttons

Second- her amazing pleating

When asked which era of fashion history she was drawn to she commented, "I personally love the Art Deco period. I love the understated glamour and clean lines. "

Inspirational Artists
It was interesting to find out that Clare is inspired by sculpture particulary Richard Deacon, Anish Kapoor, Richard Serra, and Cathy De Monchaux, have been very influential.
She also makes textile sculptures alongside her accessories.

Creative Process
I start with a sketched idea which nearly always changes. I then stitch the fabric which dictates the shape of the bag or scarf. I allow the fabric to fall into position and create its own shape and add appropriate handles or edging.

A Stroll back in Time:

Art Nouveau was a dominate art form in 1900 at the Paris Exhibition. It was a decorative art form which followed on fromthe Arts and Crafts Movement. Primarily it covered interiors, architecture, jewellery an furniture design. It was definately prominate throughout fashion and fabrics.

BUTTONS:

Covered buttons were vastly prominate within Victorian Fashion. They were used as functional elements, and later as ornamental, or decrative purposes.

I love those riding and day dresses of the bustle era with numerous covered buttons used strategically used as decoration!

PLEATING:

Folding the fabric back on to itself and securing it in place is a pleat, twelve different pleats can easily be define. And they extend through out costume history to our modern time.

The first image I think of when I think of pleating in costume history is Greek art. The rendering of the texture of folds, the stylize characteristics as seen throughout Ancient Greece.

In 1856 women no longer had to wear up to six petticoats to hold their wide skirts out, a cage frame called the crinoline was marketed throughout Europe. along the hemline width. Cartride pleats were used along the hemlines to add extra flounces and made the skirts appear even wider.

Then of course I think of Mariano Fortuny! Throughout his silk gowns he created a number of variations of pleating.

"I decided to open my Etsy shop a couple of months after to speaking to my friend Hannah Nunn at a trade fair who has a shop on Etsy. I think itis a great marketing tool but I also find it very social and inspirational. "

Linen-Bamboo Hat Completed!

The hat is finally completed! It took me slightly longer than I anticipated, in between alterations, fittings, and a wedding, I am glad to say it is complete.

It is more of a couture headpiece, it is not an everyday hat for sure.

Working from my sketch I constructed a small top hat from buckram. It is covered in the linen fabric from the skirt I purchased. The linen was perfect to work with, I enjoyed working with the printed white and blue stripes on the fabric.

The tip of the hat is made of rows of bamboo stitched together.

Bamboo pieces are used as a small accent in the front of the headpiece. The top hat is attached to a buckram base which contains horsehair along the edge to attach to ones head.

The top hat is attached to the base at a slight tilt to the side. I also used the linen fabric between the base and top hat with an additional accent of bamboo.

It is perfect for a special occasion, worn at a slight tilt on the head!

The Cycles of Fashion

The fashion industry is an important aspect in our everyday lives. Take a look at The History Of Costume it is easy to identify elements which repeat themselves through time.

This is the first of many postings entitled, "The Cycles of Fashion, " my Thursday posts will showcase and present fashion creators from the Etsy community. The wonderful community of Esty contains so many talented drapers, tailors, patternmakers, stitchers, and milliners. My goal is to expose and showcase them!

Utilizing the history of costume, I will identify how they transend through time to modern fashion.

This period extends beyond the war's end when austere garments were worn.

A flapper was initially a derogatory term, but soon was used to describe any young woman in the 1920's who wore cloche hats, bobbed her hair, and danced the Chareston.

Fashion was inspired by artist Leon Bakst the costumer and set designer of Sergei Diaghilev's Ballet Russes in 1909. Dress designer Paul Poiret was very influenced by the ballet and separately created garments .

Today I will be sending out a cutom order for a pair of velvet spats .

They are made of a light grey velvet and a darker grey satin ruffle. It took me longer to locate the velvet then it did to construct them .

I was pretty satisfied with the outcome. They do look lovely!

Lately I have not been able to update (sorry I usually do twice a week). I have been working on several projects, two of which I am excited to almost have finished!

Just wanted to let everyone know that I am adding a new post (beginning next week) every Thursday entitled "The Cycles of Fashion" !

I will be showcasing artisans from the Etsy community. The wonderful community of Esty contains so many talented drapers, tailors, pattern makers, stitchers, and milliners. My goal is to expose and showcase those fashion creators!

My main focus will be how the history of costume transcends though time and is presented in modern fashion. Whether we acknowledge it or not, the fashion industry is an important aspect in our everyday lives.

A New Hat!

Recently I found some bamboo in the house. My husband had purchased it for some piece or something he had done and I found it lying around. (My husband has been creating art pieces for as long as I have known him.)

Quickly my head began to run with thoughts of what I could construct from it.

First thing this morning I took a look at my favorite milliner's site for inspiration. My list included: Philip Treacy, Stephen Jones, and Louis Mairette.

I will be incorporating some linen fabric I purchased at the Mercato on Saturday morning. (It is actually a skirt, the colors just caught my eye.) It will have a buckram base, and the exterior will contain the bamboo.

My design sketch is now complete! In between alterations I am finishing up for a client, my goal is to complete my millinery creation by the beginning of next week!

Photo Exhibit in Bologna

Thirty selected works of Gian Paolo Barbieri will be on display at the Forni Galleria d'Arte, in Bologna, from May the 9 until June the 30, 2009.

The Italian master's career began in 1964 photographing high fashion. He photographed the greatest designers of "made in Italy" from Valentino to Versace, Armani to Ferré, in the years in which Italian designers were prominent in the world of prêt-a-porter .

Lately I have been thinking about getting some outdoors furniture for or wonderful Italian home. This morning I stumbled upon this beauty!

It is produced by an Italian furniture company. Wow, they have some amazing pieces!

B&B Italia is a company made of various designers, and architects. Take a look at their website, they have some one of a kind pieces!!

The pictured chair is from their most recent collection entitled, Crinoline.

Blouse Projects- Part 2

So my first blouse is now completed and delivered to the client!

For the first blouse I chose to place one embroidery design on the front right side, the second is on the back right side. I wanted to attain a movement of the two decorative pieces.

Again because the decorative pieces were so close to the selvage I had to alter my pattern. For this project it was simpler to flat-pattern the blouse, and I took it from there.

The front contains two center-front piece at breast level, one containing the decorative piece with a front closure of one button. Below the breast-line I had to break up the front pattern piece for the placement of the decorative piece.

For the collar I thought it would be nice to use a mandarin collar . Being that the fabric is from Vietnam, I wanted to give the over all design a nice fresh feel! The back contains a center-back seam and the other decorative piece on the right back shoulder.

One project completed, one more to go!!

This wonderful creation just caught my eye.

I find it intriguing!

This wonderful piece is by a designer named Tamae Hirokawa’s who's fashion label is SOMARTA. Formerly she was in charge of the collection line of Issey Miyake men and Issey Miyake.

Her conceptual approach to fashion design uses lace, masks, macramé, and advanced Japanese textile technology.

To Have Only Seen It!

On April the 26, 2009, this amazing exhibit closed at the Palais Galliera Fashion Museum, in Paris. The exhibition covered the period of the Second Empire in France (1852-1870) when the crinoline was vastly in use.

More than 300 garments were on display. Also on display were dance cards, fans, jewelry, accessories, flower-holders, headdresses -- some even belonging to the Empress Eugenie and Princess Mathilde

This was the period that was later said to give birth to haute couture, when the House of Charles Worth made its debut among other fashion firms and jewelers. With the arrival of chemicals, textiles contained prints and stripes of clashing colors. Dresses contained an overload of ornaments, fringes, wreaths of flowers, lace, and ribbon. It was normal for a women to change her outfit up to five times in one day. She had to keep up with the pace of social life and dinners, concerts, receptions, opera and theater.

Wow! What a period of history!

Blouse Projects

I was given two pieces of fabric from a client, she requested two different styles of blouse be made for her. Each piece, one yellow pictured above and one pink, which contains the same design she had received as a gift from a friend who is from Vietnam. Her only request was that both blouses contain short sleeves.

Two very important points I had to work with were:

1. There was not much fabric, a little less than a yard, if not exactly a yard.

2. Each piece contained two embroidered pieces, but as you can see from the picture, they are situated inches from the selvage edge.

I had previously worked with this client so I pretty much had a feel for her style. After coming up with the two designs I patterned them out.

I was kind of hesitant to actually cut the fabric, but I went ahead and had two mock-ups to try on.

*Note- I did leave seam allowance and I did not finish any of my edges.

They were both perfect fits! She was very excited and happy with her blouses. I was very satisfied as well, both designs are completely different!

Later this week I will post a picture of the two completed blouses.

I love to work on projects that are a challenge, it keeps it exciting!

Summer-Spring Spats Anyone?

This ruffle sensation is the first of my Summer-Spring Spat collection. The collection will include an entirely new series of patterns and construction.

This first piece is made of a white cotton containing woven squares. For the ruffle I used a cotton plaid of blue, beige, and white. The other side of the spat, or the inner-step is made of matching plaid fabric.

A spat will be an accessory that will take your outfit to a whole other level. The collection will be in soft spring colors with varying detailing. I am very excited about the collection!

The entire collection will all be sold in my Etsy shop. Enjoy!

A Lovely Find!

Thrift stores, or vintage stores are not very common in our area. So I was really excited when we stopped by one in San Marino after my fitting yesterday. (My fitting went wonderfully well, I received a request for two more hats!!)

I had to buy this lovely pair of beauties. I just fell in love! And I just spent 10 euros!

There was just something about them, and they were my size!!

Tribute to Stephen Jones

This is one of my favorite subjects to write about. I wanted to share this, if you have not seen it, you must take a look!

SHOWstudio unveiled a tribute to Stephen Jones, conciding with the opening of the exhibition at the Victoria and Albert Museum. It explores the inspirations along with the key players , including the influence of Cecil Beaton's 1971 exhibition "Fashion: An Anthology" .

Inspiration, design, and Jone's millinery are the topics in four short films featuring Stephen Jones, curator Oriole Cullen and set designer Michael Howells. I enjoyed walking through the process of bringing it all together!

Take a look at some of the wealth of British milinery talent, celebrating the exhibit. With images taken by Clive Booth of the museum's Fashion in Motion event. I loved seeing all the behind-the -scene images.

Then take a look at some of the hats worn by the guests. Some lovely creations, some, what is that! Talk about an assortment of hats!

One can also view the original sketch and blueprints of the exhibition designs by Michael Howell. I enjoyed seeing the actual sketch along with Howell's notes.

I am familiar with the book, "Crowns: Portraits of Black Women in Church Hats" by Michael Cunningham. It is visually amazing for any hat lover!

I recently found out that various stage productions have been made stemming from this book. Take a look!

It sure is nice to see that avid hat wearing is still present in modern everyday life!

She is located in Germany and has a background in tailoring and art . Her pieces of work contain such wonderful detail, using materials from the 1900's to the 1930's. As stated on her website:

Athens- Dimitris Dassios

Until recently I was not familiar with this amazing designer, he was born in Athens. Starting off as an actor, Dimitris Dassios , later started expressing his artistic nature in jewellery and accessories design.

His amazing work incorporates fine embroidery and leather to create handcrafted pieces.

Dior in Moscow

An exhibit entitled " Christian Dior, 60 Years of Photography" is on display in the Museum of Modern Art, Moscow.

Through 120 photos, it allows the viewer to travel through the years of the amazing fashion house.

Wow! This would be an amazing journey to follow!!

As I am planning my trip to visit the Victorian and Albert Museum I can not believe I am really going to view such an amazing exhibit.

The main purpose for my travel is to view Hats: An Anthology by Stephen Jones .

(It's great living in Italy!) London here I come!

Classic Beret

I was surprised to find out that the classic beret is still very popular with Italians. "Il berreto ", as it is called in Italy is still widely used by women and children.

While working on some hats for a client I was inspired, I took a break to produce the above beret. It not a complicated hat, it took less then an hour to complete.

With Easter around the corner, I will see how many more I can produce. I have some ideas for some cute children's berets!

20 Years of Sorbier

An exhibititon will be dedicated to French fashion designer Franck Sorbier. This will be the first devoted to him, in Central France's Lyon fabric museum, celebrating 20 years of his work. The retrospecive of his work is marking the last 10 in haute couture, one of only 11 houses entitled to that designation under the strict rules of Paris fashion's governing body.

Sorbier is a hands-on craftman who creates unique pieces. He uses a technique of compression where he sews over fabric over and over, it is similar to giving fabrics a quality of papier mache. He turns humble raw materials into works of art, using various amazing techniques.

The exhibit will run from March to September 2009.
